Elijah Wood Tells Hilarious Story Of "Fart Heard Round The Shire"

A “concussion fart” on your first day? We’ve all been there.

The Lord Of The Rings actor Elijah Wood recounted an unfortunate story of how he let one loose in an opening scene of The Fellowship of the Ring, which made an... impression on the cast and crew.

In 2017, Amazon acquired the television rights for the epic high fantasy series of books for a modest $250 million, announcing that there are a whopping five seasons in development and winning it the title of the most expensive television series in history. For comparison, the eighth season of Game Of Thrones cost $90 million, whereas Amazon Studios is expecting every season of its adaptation of The Lord Of The Rings to tot up to $100 to 150 million each. Ouch.

"This epic drama is set thousands of years before the events of J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, and will take viewers back to an era in which great powers were forged, kingdoms rose to glory and fell to ruin, unlikely heroes were tested, hope hung by the finest of threads, and the greatest villain that ever flowed from Tolkien's pen threatened to cover all the world in darkness," explained the show's synopsis.

Similarly, The Lord Of The Rings: Gollum will tell an untold story through the eyes of Gollum. Check out the upcoming stealth game below.

So, while we won't be seeing Frodo and friends return to the small screen, this isn't to say that gems from behind-the-scenes on the original trilogy won't come to light more than a decade after its release. Wood had been invited to appear on an episode of Hot Ones, where YouTuber Sean Evans asks celebrities to chow down rounds of chicken wings coated in an unbelievably hot sauce and answer questions. Evans inquired whether the legend of the "fart heard round the Shire" did really happen.

On the first day of filming of The Fellowship of the Ring, Wood, Sean Astin, Billy Boyd and Dominic Monaghan (who played Samwise Gamgee, Pippin Took and Merry Brandybuck respectively) had to roll down a hill after Pippin and Merry crash into them. "They bang into us. We roll down the hill. So it's picking up that moment of falling down the hill and falling on top of each other in a very comedic way," explained Wood.

"And I think it was, like, take two. And I had a - what is that, a concussion fart? - a fart that is brought on by pressure, and yeah, I literally fell, [fart noise] and everybody burst out laughing. It's very funny. It's a hell of a way to start filming Lord of the Rings," admitted the actor. I've literally never heard of a "concussion fart" before but I feel richer for the knowledge.
