It seems the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy game used to have multiplayer once upon a time. After audience comparisons to the live-service Marvel's Avengers, Square Enix assured us that Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy would be nothing like it. Perhaps that's a good thing as Marvel's Avengers has recently doxxed streamers by showing their IP addresses on-screen. But before there was this clear distinction between the visions for these games, it seemed that Guardians did have multiplayer once upon a time.

Wccftech has noticed in the LinkedIn profile of someone who worked on Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy that there was a time when the developers were implementing live multiplayer elements to the game. Simon Larouche worked at Eidos-Montréal and while there worked on Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy.

Here is the trailer for Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy in case you missed it...

His official title when working at the development company was online gameplay director, which confirms that there was once multiplayer capabilities to the game that later got put aside. It's not clear when these plans changed as many think Marvel's Avengers mediocre performance or development problems had something to do with this change.

It's a shame, however, I personally would have loved to play Gamora while my mates took on the roles of the other heroes and charged into fights. All while we listen to some rad tunes in the background - it could have been great. But this portion of the game was obviously cancelled for a reason, and if Marvel's Avengers hiccups are anything to go by, perhaps it's a good thing that the team decided to quit while they were ahead.

Simon Larouche also happens to be important to another development studio at the moment and seems to be leading an unannounced project. The game director is working on a secret game for Guerilla Games, the studio that made Horizon Zero Dawn and is currently working on Horizon Forbidden West. We're keeping a close eye on what this project could be, but for now, we're just excited to meet Aloy again sometime later this year.
