God of War studio Santa Monica reportedly working on a new sci-fi game

After yesterday’s Xbox Games Showcase, we know exactly what the future is looking like for Xbox users and let me just say, it is incredibly bright. After a rough couple of months, Xbox dazzled viewers with what may just be the showcase of the season. From Avowed to Fable, we got updates on plenty of first-party franchises.

That’s not something I can necessarily say for PlayStation. At last month’s PlayStation Showcase, the focus was primarily on third-party games. In fact, the only major first-party reveal we received was a first look at the gameplay of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 - followed by a release date at Summer Game Fest. Rumours claim that Sucker Punch are almost finished on Ghost of Tsushima 2, despite the fact that the game hasn’t been announced. We know that Naughty Dog are working on a mysterious single-player project too after the canning of the TLOU multiplayer title, but we have no idea exactly what it is. We’re completely in the dark when it comes to God of War creators Santa Monica Studio as well, but that may have just changed.

One developer has seemingly let slip that Santa Monica Studio are working on a new sci-fi game which is an exciting prospect. As reported by ComicBook, Alanah Pearce, a writer at the studio, recently appeared on the Play, Watch, Listen podcast where she spoke with Mike Bithell who said that he was working on an “unspecified sci-fi franchise”. Pearce then laughed and added “same”, potentially confirming the genre of Santa Monica’s next IP.

Admittedly, it’s not a lot to go on, but it’s a fun prospect if you’ve been wanting to see the studio tackle another genre. That being said, worry not God of War fans. It seems as if there are several teams at work over at the studio. We know Cory Balrog lessened his involvement in God of War Ragnarök in order to focus on other projects, which suggests that one team may be working on GoW while another works on this sci-fi IP.

So, if you were hoping for a new saga in Kratos’ story or the Atreus spin-off Ragnarök hinted towards, it could still happen. We’ll have to wait and see.
