Jet Set Radio, Crazy Taxi remakes finally on the horizon

Big-budget remakes of Jet Set Radio and Crazy Taxi are reportedly in the works at Sega.

Oh there’s nothing quite like the sweetness of nostalgia which is probably why remakes are all the rage right now. We’ve already had Dead Space so far this year, and the release of Resident Evil 4 is just around the corner.

Just the other day, PlayStation fans gathered to discuss the fact that they’d love to see PlayStation Home brought back to life. The PS3-era social platform was way ahead of its time. Today though, it’s SEGA who are looking to scratch that nostalgia itch - and it’s news that will be particularly exciting for Dreamcast fans. According to a Bloomberg report, the company is looking to remake Jet Set Radio and Crazy Taxi.

Speaking of Resident Evil 4, take a look at the latest trailer below.

It’s claimed that these “big-budget” remakes are a part of the Super Game Initiative. Announced back in 2021, the initiative basically formalises SEGA’s plan to develop “new and innovative titles” as well as look into its catalogue of dormant IPs. It’s thought that Crazy Taxi and Jet Set Radio have been earmarked as franchises that could be rebooted.

Let’s start with Crazy Taxi. It’s thought that devs have been working on the game for one year, with the title around two to three years away from release. The game first appeared in arcades in 1999 but it was later ported to the Dreamcast in 2000 and eventually, a whole host of other consoles including the PS2, Nintendo GameCube, and Game Boy Advance. You essentially play as a Taxi driver - shocking, I know - driving customers from A to B. You do get extra tips for completing stunts though, very normal.

Jet Set Radio also released on the Dreamcast in 2000 and was later ported to the PS3, Game Boy Advance, and Xbox 360 amongst other consoles. In this title, you play as a youth gang of spray painting skaters who are at war with a rival gang. It’s not yet known where this reboot is in the development cycle. Either way, it’ll be exciting to eventually play both of these titles.
