Star Wars Jedi Knight: Dark Forces 2 gets gorgeous Unreal Engine remake

Childhood memories have been unlocked with this one

Far too many publishers are letting fans do all the hard work to remake old games rather than doing it themselves. It’s frustrating. Yet, the results we get with these fan-made projects are nothing short of incredible, as demonstrated by the latest remake to grace our screens: Star Wars Jedi Knight: Dark Forces 2.

Some of you may already be turning away from this, certain in your belief that the most important classic Star Wars game is Knights of the Old Republic – it is beloved by fans, after all. To the point that news of the remake’s cancellation left fans deflated. However, for that game to have existed, titles like Dark Forces 2 had to be made.

See Star Wars Jedi Knight: Dark Forces 2 returned to its glory!

The sequel to the hugely popular (even nowadays, with a “very positive” rating) Dark Forces, the second game continues where the original ended, with Kyle Katarn in search of a lightsaber and knowledge of his powers. It wasn’t as well-received as the first game, but it still had a strong following, a following that’s still going today.

If it’s doing so well still, why is a remake needed? Quite simply, the old graphics are hard to look at. Not ignoring how awesome it is to see any retro game remastered to its previous glory. Using the Unreal Engine, the remake has finally been completed after three years of tireless effort from YouTuber Ruppertle.

According to the creator, they wanted to recreate one of their “favourite games” without losing the “base look, feeling and gameplay” elements that made it such a joy to play. We can sincerely say that they’ve achieved exactly what they set out to do, a sentiment numerous other fans also share.

“I so much love that you kept the original sound design, which was and still is fantastic and a big part of the whole nostalgia without being really outdated,” exclaimed one thrilled gamer, while another said, “This is an incredible love letter to DF2. I can't wait to see where this goes.” We, too, hope that Ruppertle continues to create remasters of old games like this, if for nothing other than the joy it brings others.
