Elden Ring collides with The Witcher in new dark fantasy RPG

If the responses to Dragon’s Dogma II and Baldur’s Gate 3 are anything to go by, it’s clear that many of us are desperate to escape to expansive fantastical worlds.

Those are just two examples, but I could name more: Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Hogwarts Legacy, Elden Ring … the list goes on. There’s something so enchanting about being whisked away to an entirely different world, complete with its own lore and history.

Elden Ring is perhaps an apt one to mention because if you like your fantasy worlds dark and grisly, you may want to keep an eye on the upcoming Hordes of Hunger.

With a world that visually echoes the Lands Between, Hordes of Hunger sees players assume the role of a monster-vanquishing soldier, giving this eerie title a certain The Witcher vibe to it too.

Developed by Hyperstrange and set to be published by Kwalee, Hordes of Hunger’s description reads, “Take control of Mirah to defend your homeland from a living hunger, wield powerful weapons and abilities, and save others from the advancing hordes.”

Standing apart from the aforementioned titles, Hordes of Hunger is part hack n’ slash and part action roguelike.

Players will be tasked with fighting for survival against “ever-intensifying” waves of monsters. You’ll be able to create your own loadout, choosing from a variety ranged weapons and special attacks with new abilities available to pick up as your progress through the game’s various battles.

It’s not all about the monsters though. There are various quests available, including helping your homeland’s fellow residents escape from the madness. Take on these quests and you’ll reap the rewards.

The end goal isn’t simply to return your homeland to its former glory either. You’re also going to want to find out what exactly brought these grisly mutants here in the first place.

With breakable structures, a fully voiced story, and dozens of upgradable skills, there’s plenty within Hordes of Hunger to keep players busy.

Whilst the game doesn’t have a release date just yet, you can wishlist it now on Steam. It’s due to drop sometime in 2024.
