Certain Xbox fans will be able to download and play Assassin’s Creed Valhalla for free this month for a limited time.

The Assassin’s Creed RPG will be joining the Xbox Game Pass line-up, alongside other heavy-hitting titles like the Resident Evil 2 remake, We Happy Few and Close To The Sun.

The full list of additions was shared via the Xbox Game Pass Twitter account, which promised it’ll be the “first of many” updates to the subscription service in 2024. If this is how they’re starting the year, it’s bound to be a good one for free games to play.

While it’s not the best Assassin’s Creed game out there, it does have its fans. It was part of what’s colloquially known as the RPG trilogy, which Ubisoft kicked off with Assassin’s Creed Origins. This was then followed up with Assassin’s Creed Odyssey which lent more into the RPG mechanics, before finally concluding with Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, often called the worst of the three.

Since then Ubisoft has seemingly gone back to its roots of stealth-based gameplay, shown through Assassin’s Creed Mirage being more along the lines of the original games.

Ubisoft has confirmed that it’s not throwing away the RPG formula entirely, as the upcoming Assassin’s Creed: Codename Red will also feature some of those gameplay elements, for better or worse.

Regardless, while the majority of fans aren’t too keen on Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, its inclusion on Xbox Game Pass is a good one, if you can get past the enormous installation size that is.

Assassin’s Creed Valhalla will officially join the service on 9 January and will be followed by some of the other Game Pass additions, a few of which are already available as of today.
