Since the series' inception in 2007, the Assassin’s Creed franchise has become one of the most popular properties not only for publisher Ubisoft but also within the video game industry as a whole.

The latest entry in the series is Assassin’s Creed Mirage which in many respects had taken the series back to its 2007 roots with a more condensed map and less of an emphasis on RPG mechanics. Though it still shared a lot of similarities with Assassin’s Creed Valhalla at least in terms of gameplay. After all, Assassin’s Creed Mirage was originally intended to be an expansion to Valhalla, before Ubisoft decided to evolve it into a standalone game.

In our review of Assassin’s Creed Mirage, we said that it’s: “a glorious return to form for the series, and I had a joyous time playing through it. It’s great to see the series shift its focus back to stealth and a compelling narrative about the Order of Assassins, and I sincerely hope Ubisoft treat Mirage as the new baseline going forward, whilst still evolving the series further.”

Earlier this month, Microsoft announced the first new additions coming to Xbox Game Pass in 2024 and it began the new year with some bangers. Included in the Xbox Game Pass for the first month of the year is the brilliant Resident Evil 2 remake, Close to the Sun, and We Happy Few to name just three. It also included the topic of today’s discussion, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla.

Titles included in Xbox Game Pass are released sporadically throughout the month. The date for Assassin’s Creed Valhalla was 9 January which of course now means that it’s available for free to download and play right now. As long as you subscribe to Xbox Game Pass, of course. So if you’re yet to play this Viking-themed open-world RPG adventure, now could be the perfect opportunity.

Assassin’s Creed Valhalla is out now on PC, PlayStation and Xbox.
