After the debut trailer for Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (or KOTOR) was taken off the internet last week, fans were left wondering if this meant the PlayStation game had been cancelled. Luckily, Sony Entertainment has released a statement on the matter.
Originally released in 2003, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic quickly became one of Xbox’s most loved games. Now with a PlayStation 5 remake on the cards courtesy of developer Aspyr, fans are gearing up for a trip down nostalgia lane. However, with various rumours that the game has been cancelled as well as the removal of the recent debut trailer, it is set to be a rocky future for the title.

News of the disappearing trailer broke on Friday 29 September after IGN reported that fans were worried KOTOR had been cancelled after the trailer was taken down. Since then, Sony, via ComicBook.com has issued a statement stating the removal was due to issues with music licensing.

“Sony has issued a statement in response to the removal of 'Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic' remake trailers and tweets, insisting it has to do with music licensing,” it reads. A Sony spokesperson also claimed the company will take down assets that feature licensed music once the license itself expires. So, the good news is that it was a simple issue but that does not mean it will be smooth sailing from here.
Development has reportedly been put on hold as Aspyr continues to deal with internal issues. This comes a year after KOTOR was delayed indefinitely with reports that the studio had fired its art director and design director and were planning on stopping the project to seek contract developers. Not only that but Aspyr owner, Embracer Group has recently reported some financial issues that resulted in it issuing mass layoffs and even shutting down Saints Row developer Volition.
Overall, it has been a tough journey for Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and it shows no signs of stopping. Hopefully we will see the game sooner rather than later.
