Sony Confirms Release Dates For Overhauled PlayStation Plus

Hopefully by now, we’ve all had time to digest the news of the overhauled PlayStation Plus, because I’m here with yet further updates. For months, insiders teased us with crumbs of intel on what PlayStation Plus might become (Anyone remember Spartacus?) but the moniker is here to stay, and it’s bringing three juicy new tiers with it.

The overhauled PlayStation Plus system will be split between three price levels named Essential, Extra, and Premium. All current subscribers to PlayStation Plus will be automatically enrolled onto the Essential level. Sony originally announced that the service would launch in June, but now we have exact release dates.

Asian markets (excluding Japan) will receive the overhauled PlayStation Plus first on 23 May 2022, followed by Japan on 1 June. The Americas are then up next on 13 June before Europe rounds us out on 22 June.

In case you missed it, each price tier brings with it its own unique benefits. Essential replaces the current PlayStation Plus experience. Subscribers will receive a selection of free monthly games, in-store discounts, plus access to online multiplayer. This tier will cost £6.99/$9.99 a month or £49.99/$59.99 a year.

Extra will include additional access to a library of over 400 downloadable PlayStation 4 and 5 games - including Returnal, Marvel’s Spider-Man and God of War. This tier will cost £10.99/$14.99 a month or £83.99/$99.99 a year.

On top of that, Premium will include access to PlayStation 3 titles (via cloud streaming) plus an extensive catalogue of PlayStation, PlayStation 2, and PSP titles available for both download and streaming. Syphon Filter is just one franchise that’s been teased so far.

So many games, so little time. I think we can all say a gentle RIP to our gaming backlog which is about to grow exponentially.
