Earlier this year, we got the official confirmation that yet more screen adaptations of various PlayStation franchises are in the works, just in case we didn’t already have enough. That’s right, as well as HBO’s The Last of Us and the Twisted Metal series, we also know that we’re getting a God of War show on Amazon Prime Video and an adaptation of Horizon Zero Dawn coming to Netflix.

One of the slightly more bizarre choices revealed though was the Gran Turismo movie, which I really wanted to believe would be like some kind of mature version of Cars. That’s unfortunately not the case though - The Hollywood Reporter write that the film will follow the story of a teenage Gran Turismo player who becomes an actual race car driver.

Now, also reported by The Hollywood Reporter, it’s been confirmed that Stranger Things star David Harbour (AKA Jim Hopper) will be joining the Gran Turismo cast. Apparently, he’ll take on the role of a retired driver, who will teach the teenage protagonist how to drive. More dad-mode David Harbour? Yes please.
Neill Blomkamp (District 9) will be directing, and the script is being written by Zach Baylin (King Richard) and Jason Hall (American Sniper). Producing are Asad Qizilbash and Carter Swan (from PlayStation Productions), alongside Doug Belgrad and Dana Brunetti.
“As one of PlayStation’s longest standing and most beloved franchises, it’s great to be partnering with Columbia Pictures again to bring Gran Turismo to life in an exciting way,” Qizilbash said in a statement. “We can’t wait for audiences to see Neill’s vision of this inspiring true story of gamer turned professional race car driver.”
