The Black Phone was a great horror film based on a 2004 short story by Joe Hill. It starred Ethan Hawke in a profound and disturbing performance as The Grabber, a sadistic murderer who preys on young boys.
The original film centred on the abduction of a boy named Finney who is kept in a soundproof basement where a disconnected black phone keeps ringing. It's spooky, unsettling and does a lot with minimal cast and locations. A sequel is perhaps unexpected, but not unwarranted given the original film made $161 million on a $16 million budget.

The film came from Blumhouse, a studio now renowned for a wealth of horror releases that have been hits with genre fans, often specialising in low budget ideas. Their latest release, Five Nights at Freddy's has been received with mixed reactions and taps into the video game franchise made famous via Let's Play YouTube videos.

The most surprising part of this announcement is the fact that it has a release date for 27 June 2025. Although there are no other details, C. Robert Cargill did tweet about the sequel, likely confirming his return to writing duties. Cargill co-wrote the original film alongside the director, Scott Derrickson and Joe Hill.
With no casting news, we can't even guess to what the plot for the sequel might be, so we'll be waiting with bated breath for any information. Blumhouse has already had a successful 2023 with The Exorcist: Believer, also slated for a sequel in 2025 which will be joined by the follow up to M3GAN. The next film from Blumhouse will be with us 5 January 2024 and is called Night Swim, which debuted with a very unique trailer before Five Nights at Freddy's.
