The Witcher showrunner confirms season 3 release window

Do you remember the days when Netflix’s The Witcher wasn’t plagued by drama? As I’m sure you’re now aware, Henry Cavill announced his departure from the series last year. Season three will serve as the actor’s last, with Liam Hemsworth then assuming the role of Geralt of Rivia in season four.

It’s all been very amicable on the surface, but that hasn’t stopped the internet from going into a full-on detective mode in a bid to try and find out the reason behind Cavill’s departure. It’s thought that perhaps Cavill doesn’t agree with the writers’ decision to depart from the plot of the source novels. In fact, over 300,000 fans have signed a petition asking Netflix to fire the writers and rehire Cavill. We will have three whole seasons featuring Cavill’s Geralt to enjoy though.

We already knew that The Witcher’s third season would release this year but now we have a much better idea of exactly when it’ll debut. As reported by Comic Book, showrunner Lauren Hissrich revealed in a recent interview with Collider that the show was aiming for a target release date of July 2023. We may not be getting all episodes at once though. Just like Stranger Things and You, The Witcher could be getting the Volume 1 and Volume 2 treatment.

“We haven’t discussed that yet, but at this point I think what we see happening across all sorts of streamers, I wouldn’t rule it out,” Hissirch said. “I do think that, obviously, we don’t put out anything that we’re not incredibly proud of so that dictates our entire launch date - and I think it’ll be interesting.”

“Again, we have a way still, a very long time, eight-ish months or so until The Witcher season three comes out so God willing, we get it all out at the same time but who knows? We’ll see what happens.” It’s believed that season four will start filming in the latter half of this year but if you can’t wait to see Liam Hemsworth in Geralt’s garb, fans have begun creating mock-up posters.
