Brendan Fraser Cast As Batman Villain In Upcoming DC Movie

The Brenaissance continues

The Brenaissance continues! Brendan Fraser’s impressive career comeback continues to blaze ahead, with news of his casting in a major upcoming DC movie.

Deadline reports that Fraser is set to take on the role of the villainous Firefly in the live-action Batgirl movie alongside Leslie Grace’s titular superhero. Bad Boys for Life directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah are leading the project, which currently has a tentative 2022 release window.

For those not well versed in Batman lore, Firefly - real-name Garfield Lynns - is a pyromaniac who became a fiery supervillain when his career as a Hollywood pyrotechnic expert fell to pieces. As you’ve probably guessed, setting things on fire is very much his whole thing. Everyone in Gotham City needs a gimmick, right?

Firefly typically spends his time fighting with - and losing to - Batman. Gamers will no doubt remember he popped up as one of the villains in Batman: Arkham Knight, where he was swiftly punched in the face multiple times and tossed in jail. It’s unclear whether he’ll be the main threat in Batgirl, or a smaller bad guy that’s quickly dispatched early on in the movie. I’m hoping for the former, because more Brendan Fraser is never a bad thing.

Fans of Fraser and DC will also know this won’t mark the star’s first appearance in the comic book universe. Fraser currently plays Robotman in the excellent Doom Patrol, which you really should check out if you haven’t already.

With DC checked off the list for both TV and film, Fraser should set his sights on the Marvel Cinematic Universe next. Fans already have a few excellent ideas for who he could play if he ever crossed paths with The Avengers, and it'd be a shame to let such great pitches go to waste. Let's make it happen, yeah? Yeah!
