For its 20th birthday, Ubisoft is giving away Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell for free and honestly that's not the most exciting Splinter Cell news we've gotten today.
A shiny new developer roundtable video reveals a little more about the highly anticipated remake that is on the horizon. Previously, we were aware that the team want to maintain the "spirit of the early games" in the series in the new entry, however, there is an impetus to improve a selection of the gameplay mechanics to modernise these for present players. "We can look back at the plot, the characters, the overall story of the game [and] make some improvements - things that might not have aged particularly well, small things - but the core of the story, the core of the experience will remain as it was in the original game," said creative director Chris Auty.

Ubisoft has also shared four screenshots of concept art for the remake, showing fabulous use of colour and contrast. There is absolutely a gritty and cinematic tone to these, especially in the interrogation scene and the idling car outside the building, so fans who have been holding out for a new Fisher odyssey should be as pleased as Punch. Yet, if you were hoping for a launch window, then temper your expectations. "We're still prototyping, we don't want to rush anything, " said senior game designer Andy Schmoll. "We want to make sure that we absolutely nail the game, we do everything in the right way, and produce an absolutely stellar quality experience."

Well, in the interim, head over to the Ubisoft Store and claim Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell before 30 November, and players both new and old will be able to get to grips with the first installment in the classic stealth series. This is a 20 year old game, to remind everyone, so be sure to anticipate some crispy crunchy visuals and slightly awkward controls. Ah, it takes me back.
