Another week, another round of rumours about this year's Battlefield game - which may or may not be called Battlefield 6, but for now, that's what we're sticking with. And our latest morsel of might-be, might-not-be news pertains to taking the fight into the air.

If you played Battlefield V - which is coming to PlayStation Plus in May, in case you missed it - you might well know about the promise of crash landings. It was suggested that players could grab a plane, head up above the ground combat, and then bring their wings down on the enemy, throwing themselves from the craft at just the right time to avoid becoming so many bloody chunks. You can see the action depicted in the Battlefield V launch trailer below, at the 1.05 mark.

Ultimately, crash landings were not a part of the 2018 game. But now, it looks like this ability is coming to Battlefield 6. On Twitter, known leaker/insider of all things Battlefield related Tom Henderson placed an affirmative checkmark on a Reddit post about crash landings in Battlefield V, talking about how it was a shame they weren't included in the game.

Following up on his just-a-tick tweet, Henderson says that crash landings will appear in the as-yet-unseen debut trailer for Battlefield 6: "An Osprey crashes onto some soldiers," he says, an Osprey being tiltrotor aircraft introduced to the United States military in 2007. Which is to say, yes, Battlefield 6 is a very present-day affair, rather than a game with a historical warfare setting - something we've known since the summer of 2020.

Will crash landings totally change the dynamic of multiplayer battles in EA's forthcoming game, set for release at the end of 2021? Quite probably, otherwise, why bother adding it at all? And it sure seems to be a feature that fans of the series were looking forward to in the fifth main game, only to be denied.

In related news, we're expecting that first, official Battlefield 6 reveal in May - but don't be surprised if it carries over to June, and E3. There's also a mobile Battlefield game in the works at DICE, but the developer's general manager Oskar Gabrielson has stated that it's "a completely different game from the one we're making for console and PC, designed specifically for the mobile platform," so don't expect any crossovers with Battlefield 6. And don't expect Battlefield 6 to definitely come to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, either.
