A beloved Lord Of The Rings game is finally being remade

The Lord of the Rings: Battle for Middle-earth is getting a stunning Unreal Engine makeover thanks to a group of fans.

I’m not sure the appetite for more Lord of the Rings content ever really lessens, but last year’s Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power certainly brought the franchise back to the forefront of many of our minds. The good news is, there are plenty of projects on the way.

Daedalic Entertainment’s The Lord of the Rings: Gollum should be released this year, although the game has experienced several delays so I wouldn’t get your hopes up too much. More excitingly though, we know that Private Division and Weta Workshop are teaming up on a brand new Middle-earth set game that’ll explore and utilise the “underlying lore of the books.” As great as new games are though, we all have our nostalgic favourites. If you happened to be a fan of The Battle for Middle-earth, I have just the thing for you. One group of fans are currently remaking the game in Unreal Engine 4.

Check out the latest trailer for Gollum below.

Released all the way back in 2004, LOTR: The Battle for Middle-earth is a real-time strategy game but EA shut down the title’s official servers back in 2010. The good news is that a fan group is now remaking the game, known as BFME: Reforged. It’s not yet been revealed when the project is expected to release, as these kinds of fan endeavours take time, but it’s already shaping up nicely. Check out a teaser for the project below.

BFME: Reforged promises “new photo realistic graphics, improved game mechanics and much more.” The team have teased that their models are “about 10 times more detailed than the models from the original” game, plus maps will also be filled with extra detail including “billowing trees, grass, flying birds, and wandering wild animals.” That’s not even to mention the 4K resolution, new upgrade system, and a new global map campaign.

In fact, if you consider yourself somewhat of a game developer, the team is actually recruiting. I certainly cannot wait to see the final result.
