Netflix rolls out new rule which will charge millions for account sharing

Netflix's war against those who are generous enough to share their account with family, friends, exes and grandparents who've lost the TV remote again has now entered a new stage. In the near future, paid sharing will roll out and anyone watching without this specific subscription model will be blocked from the account.

Obviously, Netflix is anticipating a level of resentment from its customers for this choice. "From our experience in Latin America, we expect some cancel reaction in each market when we roll out paid sharing, which impacts near term member growth," it admitted. However, it looks like Netflix needs to reinstate some positive sentiment and quickly. While there was a rise in total subscribers towards the end of the year, the constant cancellations doesn't spell out a very stable entry into this year and fans have even started social media movements to try to hit Netflix where it hurts.

As per a report from Android Authority, Netflix's fourth quarter fiscal results brought the bulletin that things are about to change very significantly for a fair few users. "Later in Q1, we expect to start rolling out paid sharing more broadly. Today’s widespread account sharing (100M+ households) undermines our long-term ability to invest in and improve Netflix, as well as build our business. While our terms of use limit use of Netflix to a household, we recognize this is a change for members who share their account more broadly."

"So, we’ve worked hard to build additional new features that improve the Netflix experience, including the ability for members to review which devices are using their account and to transfer a profile to a new account. As we roll out paid sharing, members in many countries will also have the option to pay extra if they want to share Netflix with people they don’t live with. As is the case today, all members will be able to watch while traveling, whether on a TV or mobile device."

There is not a designated date for when this rule will be in effect, nor which area or areas of the world will be next, but it's worth bearing in mind as the month rolls on.
