New details and gameplay have emerged for a cancelled Batman game that eventually became Middle Earth: Shadow Of Mordor.
When it comes to video game adaptations the world’s greatest detective has fared quite well, mainly due to the critical-acclaim and prestige of the Batman: Arkham trilogy.

While the video games that came before the Arkham games weren’t very noteworthy, the dark knight managed to avoid a Superman 64 scenario, though leaked gameplay has emerged from a project that could have been the best Batman game ever made.

The untitled project was reportedly set in Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight universe, and would see Batman prey upon criminals and do some detective work in an open world Gotham City.
Traversal would include gliding and cruising through the streets in the Batmobile, also known as the Tumbler in the Nolanverse.

It would have also used a “Nemesis System,” where the criminals would remember their previous encounter with Batman, presumably motivated to defeat him this time or fearful of being beaten up again.
Unfortunately the project was cancelled, as Warner Bros couldn’t get Nolan’s approval to use the Dark Knight universe, and also didn’t see the point in having a second Batman game series on the go alongside the Arkham games.
Fortunately the development didn’t all go to waste as it was transformed into Middle Earth: Shadow Of Mordor, which also featured the Nemesis System as a core part of its gameplay.
Granted, a Batman game somehow transforming into a Lord Of The Rings game is a remarkable change in direction, but it all worked out in the end as Shadow Of Mordor was fantastic.

That being said, looking through all the leaked gameplay and planned details, the finished Dark Knight game might have been better than the Arkham ones…
