Star Citizen has raised $600 million after 10 years, still no closer to being out

Star Citizen, a game that hasn’t even been officially released yet, has made over $600 million in crowdfunds over the last 10 years.

Announced in 2012, Star Citizen is a space exploration game that sees players travel throughout an enormous universe, engaging in starship combat, trading precious cargo, and more. It rivals Bethesda’s new IP Starfield in scope but is exclusive to Microsoft Windows.

While it can be played right now, it’s technically not officially been released yet, which has been the case for the last decade. Development on the title is still ongoing and has been fuelled via crowdfunding. That crowdfunding amount has now exceeded all expectations though, hitting a whopping $600 million.

While the ambitious title has continuously raked in donations since its announcement, it reportedly really picked up speed in 2020, alarming considering it regularly missed its planned release windows.

Since last September, the game’s developer Cloud Imperium Games has raised an additional $100 million, yet it seems the title is still a long way off from an official release.

Nevertheless, Cloud Imperium Games are reportedly still hard at work on the title, and are continuously updating it with new and promised features and gameplay elements. These include an overhaul to the tutorial, the ability for the game to track dynamic objects across all servers permanently, new in-game locations and activities, and much much more.

Those who’ve backed the game with a donation are also kept up-to-date with Star Citizen’s development progress.

Despite not being the only space-exploration game in the gaming space right now, like the aforementioned Starfield, No Man’s Sky, Elite Dangerous and more, it’s certainly the most ambitious, and its continued support shows fans are still desperate for the project’s completion.

Star Citizen still doesn’t have a concrete release window, though with it being several years in the making, it better be worth the wait.
