Stranger Things 'had to go', says David Harbour ahead of final season

Stranger Things is arguably one of the brightest jewels in Netflix’s crown, although recent hit Wednesday is giving the series a run for its money. Season four was, if you ask me, the best season to date so fans are eager to see season five on their screens. The bad news is, we’ve still got a wait to go.

Stranger Things’ upcoming season has only just commenced filming so it’s unlikely to land on Netflix any earlier than mid 2024. They do say good things come to those who wait. Season four was a bumper instalment boasting some feature-length runtimes, so it’s no surprise really that each episode cost a whopping $30 million. Seeing as season five is the final season, I’m expecting the streaming service to go all out and while we may be sad about Stranger Things ending, actor David Harbour said the series “had to go.”

In an interview with Discussing Film, Harbour was asked how he felt about his time playing Jim Hopper coming to an end. “I’m feeling exhausted already,” he said. “I feel like I need a nap. Just thinking about the year, it’s going to be crazy. It’s like nothing I’ve ever done before. You know, Stranger Things had to go. We have to get going because the kids are growing up. We got to shoot this thing.”

When the show premiered, Harbour “never ever wanted it to end,” but he added, “Now we’re almost nine years from filming the first season and I think it is time for it to end. But it is, of course, very bittersweet. You know, there’s a sadness there but also, we’ve all grown up. It is time for us to leave that nest and try other things and different projects, and to let the Duffer brothers try different things as well.”

Well, we know Vecna will continue to serve as the show’s final big bad - wielding his power over the Upside Down’s various evil inhabitants. If you’re interested, I have a pretty convincing theory about how Eddie could return, but not as you’d expect. We may as well theorise while we wait.
