The first few images of Zack Snyder's Rebel Moon, a sci-fi epic inspired by Akira Kurosawa, have hit the Internet and this film looks extremely, extremely expensive.
Rebel Moon was originally intended to be a Star Wars film. I know, you're very shocked. The name didn't give the game away in the slightest. This film would have been a spinoff that was mature in tone compared to the prequels and would not have centred on the Skywalkers, similar to Rogue One, but the sale of Lucasfilm to Disney in 2012 scuppered Snyder's plans. Fortunately, it worked out and Snyder is collaborating with Netflix instead to release the film at the end of the year.
“This is me growing up as an Akira Kurosawa fan, a Star Wars fan,” said Snyder in an interview in 2021. “It’s my love of sci-fi and a giant adventure. My hope is that this also becomes a massive IP and a universe that can be built out.”

Well, I don't know how much money Netflix has funnelled into this film but it must be a lot. Get a glimpse of Rebel Moon in these first four images:
Sofia Boutella stars as Kora, a young woman who seeks revolutionaries and warriors to end her own colony's oppression under the tyrannical regent Balisarius, played by Ed Skrein. General Titus, played by Djimon Hounsou, is the general of Balisarius' armies and Jimmy is an incredibly intelligent JC1435 mechanised battle robot and one-time defender of the former king. Obviously he's played by Anthony Hopkins.

Charlie Hunnam is spotted in one of the images, though his character is currently unconfirmed, and the remainder of the cast list is about as long as my arm comprising Cary Elwes, Corey Stoll, Jena Malone, Fra Fee, Cleopatra Coleman, Alfonso Herrera, Stuart Martin, Staz Nair, Sky Yang, Rhian Rees, E. Duffy and Charlotte Maggi. I'll tell you what my main takeaway is from these. There's a lot of sand.
Rebel Moon comes to Netflix on 22 December. Oh, wow, that's a long wait.
