Gex Trilogy officially announced for modern consoles

Everyone stop what you’re doing, Gex is back, and he’s coming to Xbox, PlayStation and Nintendo Switch in a brand new collection.

If you’re one of the blasphemous individuals who doesn’t know who or what Gex is, let me break it down for you. Released in 1995 for the PlayStation 1 and Sega Saturn, Gex was a 2D platformer featuring a witty protagonist of the same name, who was sucked into the Media Dimension, where film and TV tropes come to life. The series later made the jump to 3D in the sequel, which was also released on the PlayStation 1, in addition to the Nintendo 64 and PC.

Every entry in the series was heavily inspired by various television and movie genres, with Gex making plenty of tongue-in-cheek quips about real-life media and celebrities, which became a staple of his character.

It’s been years since the snarky gecko graced our screens, with the most recent entry released all the way back in 1999. Gex’s current owner Square Enix seemingly has no plans to bring the series back with a new entry, a heart-breaking reality that fans have been coping with for decades. Good news though, everyone’s favourite lizard will return, with a new modern platform collection from Limited Run Games.

The distributor is well-known for bringing retro video games to modern platforms, something that’s greatly needed considering 87% of retro games are reportedly being lost forever. Limited Run announced the good news via a live-stream last night, revealing a compilation title containing all three Gex games is on the way, called Gex: Trilogy, however no release date or preorder options were shared.

Collecting Gex, Gex: Enter The Gecko, and Gex 3: Deep Cover Gecko, the compilation will remaster the games using the Carbon Engine, and will be available for Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam.

Weirdly enough, Gex isn’t the only video game reptile being resurrected, as it was recently reported Croc will be receiving a HD remaster.

While an official release date hasn’t been confirmed as of yet, fans can rest easy knowing their beloved gecko’s return is near.
