Assassin's Creed Netflix series has already lost its showrunner

Netflix's new live-action Assassin's Creed show has hit a bump in the road after the announcement that the showrunner has now left the adaptation owing to a difference over the vision for the project.

Back in 2020, both Netflix and Ubisoft were flying high with the news of their latest creative partnership. "From its breathtaking historical worlds and massive global appeal as one of the best selling video game franchises of all time, we are committed to carefully crafting epic and thrilling entertainment based on this distinct IP and provide a deeper dive for fans and our members around the world to enjoy," said Peter Friedlander, vice president of original series at Netflix, in a statement to Deadline.

Details are scarce on the project, but a recent reveal from screenwriter and director Jeb Stuart suggests that progress on the show is decelerating slightly. In an interview with Collider, Stuart said that this departure wasn't born of bad blood. If you aren't familiar, Stuart is a prolific blockbuster action scriptwriter behind films like Die Hard, The Fugitive, Just Cause and the show Vikings: Valhalla, and is a WGA Best Screenplay Nominee and two-time Edgar Allan Poe Nominee.

"I think it was a little bit of a move of executives from LA to London, and it allowed the London group who, unfortunately, had to inherit my vision of what it was instead of getting to develop their own vision. So I think that's fair," explained Stuart. "I know it's going to be great whenever it comes out. I think the Ubisoft guys are fantastic. I think it's a terrific franchise. It was just a good, mutual time to move on for both sides."

So, the Assassin's Creed show is likely to take a moment to find its feet again with the London lot and then continue chugging along. Jason Altman and Danielle Kreinik are acting as executive producers, but as soon as we learn anything more about casting, you'll be the first to know.
