CD Projekt Red, developer of Cyberpunk 2077, has dug its heels in and is adamant that the game will be released on December 10th, as there will be no further delays.
The game was actually announced in 2012, with the iconic teaser trailer following in 2013. Once the team had completed Blood and Wine, the critically acclaimed DLC for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, pre-production started on the anticipated dystopian RPG, while their engine received upgrades to complement the studio's lofty goals for Cyberpunk 2077. The glitz and grime of Night City was shown off in PlayStation 4 Pro and PlayStation 5 gameplay the other day, boasting beautiful ray-tracing and realistically smooth animations and lip-sync for the denizens of the city.
However, 2020 has dealt some serious blows to the development of one of the most anticipated games of the last few years. Originally, it was set to launch in April, but CD Projekt Red pushed it to September to afford the team extra time to complete the remainder of the work. Even with the five more months, it also admitted that crunch would still occur for the teams, as it wants Cyberpunk 2077 to be its "crowning achievement for the generation." Frustratingly, the launch date was then moved to November, prolonging these unfavourable working conditions for employees although the game itself was finished, bar a number of bugs and gameplay issues.

Though the studio was in "overdrive," CD Projekt Red were forced to delay the game for the third time in 2020, from November 19th to December 10th. "We're aware it might seem unrealistic when someone says that 21 days can make any difference in such a massive and complex game, but they really do," said the studio. "Passing certification, or 'going gold', means the game is ready, can be completed, and has all content in it. But it doesn't mean stop working on it and raising the quality bar." And, in a subsequent call with investors, it seemed like the company wasn't confident it would reach December 10th in one piece.
Well, in its third quarter financial results, it has stood firm on what will be the final date for the launch of Cyberpunk 2077. "10.12.2020" is stamped front and centre on the earnings presentation, along with the text, "plays great also on Xbox Series X'S and PS5." Of course, it's the current-gen consoles that are allegedly stalling development, but it's cheering to see that it is much more certain on the launch date. Moreover, it confirmed that employees are staying safe while working from home, with regular antigen testing and monitoring of their health by medical professionals.
